SIMÁNDI, ÁGNES (1954 - 2015)

Ágnes was a poet, theologian, iconographer. She was educated in Hungary at Pázmány Péter Theological Academy (1978--1983) and Trinity College, Canada ( Master of Divinity,1991). Ágnes’s career was in writing and journalism: producer at Hungarian Radio Program (CHIN 1989-1995) and Independent Hungarian Radio (AM 530, 2001-2004). She published eight books of poetry and numerous articles, essays and poems in newspapers, magazines and anthologies in Hungary and Canada.

Ágnes as a theology student started being interested in iconography which is the Byzantine rite’s spiritual and artistic expression. Her major work is “The Iconostasis” for St. Michael’s Hungarian Greek Catholic Church of Hamilton, Ontario (1996). She studied icon painting with private masters.

Ágnes believed that „to write an Icon” is a unique form of meditation, which brings the iconographer into intimate contact with the spiritual world.

Költő, teológus, ikonográfus. 1978-1983 Pázmány Péter Rk. Hittudományi Akadémián teológiát hallgatott, majd 1991-ben szerezte meg a Master of Divinity fokozatot szintén teológiából a torontói egyetemen, a Trinity College-ben.

1989től 1995ig a torontói Magyar Rádió műsorvezető szerkesztője volt. 2001től 2004ig a Független Magyar Rádió munkatársaként dolgozott. 2003-tól a kanadai Magyar Élet hetilap munkatársa volt. Számtalan cikk, és írása mellett 8 önálló verseskötete jelent meg.

Teológiai tanulmányai során fedezte fel a képzőművészeti értéken felül az ikonokban rejlő spirituális mélységet. Vallotta, hogy az „ikonírás” egyedi és különleges formája a meditációnak, mely intim kapcsolatba hozza az ikon készítőjét a spirituális világgal. Alexei Mezentsev stúdiójában fejleszti tovább ikonográfiai tudását.

Legnagyobb munkája a hamiltoni Szent Mihály Görögkatolikus Templom 10 ikonból álló ikonosztáza (1996).
